FAQ
Where do you find all these fonts?
The Font Planet team are constantly searching the web for new fonts to add to our database. We also receive links from users who would like to see a particular font added to the site and we welcome submissions from font authors as well.
What font is used for the Font Planet logo?
The Aeroplane Flies.
Do you take a cut from any donations made to authors via the site?
We don't take any cut from donations to authors — without their hard work and generosity our site would not exist. We simply provide a link to their PayPal accounts as our way of saying "thanks" to the font authors and also as a convienience to our users. Apart from PayPal, there is no middle man taking a cut from your donation.
What programming languages and software were used to develop the site?
All the server-side scripts on the site are written in PHP with MySQL providing the backend database facilities. Client-side validation on the forms is done using JavaScript, and the final result after all the server-side parsing is XHTML and CSS.
Can I purchase advertising space on Font Planet?
We are currently using Google's Adsense programme to serve targetted ads on our site. At the moment, this system is being tested by us to see whether it provides a reasonable source of revenue. Whilst we may or may not stick with Google Adsense as our ad server, we'd like to give the scheme a trial for at least six months before coming to a final decision.
Why isn't there a single zip file containing all the fonts from the site?
There are a number of reasons for us not offering a single zip file of all the fonts. Firstly, it is highly unlikely that you would require all the fonts from our site, so it would simply be a waste of everyone's time and bandwidth for you to download them all, not to mention the additional work required on our part to keep the collection up to date.
Secondly, having a complete archive of all the fonts in one file would make it extremely easy for someone to come along, take all our hard work and basically create a clone of Font Planet. Whilst we haven't created any of the fonts ourselves, we have spent a lot of time working on the site — a lot of which has been directed at finding new fonts to add to our archive. We have no objections to anyone else starting up a font site of their own, but we'd prefer that you did the work instead of ripping off Font Planet.
Finally, such a file would almost double our disk space requirements (since the majority of our space is taken up by the font zip files). Although disk space is not as expensive as it used to be, we are still limited in what we can use on our server and so we'd like to conserve as much as that as possible. We'd rather double the amount of fonts available than have the same number in a single file for convienience.
